New Delhi, Oct. 30 -- The Delhi Police Crime Branch has arrested a 35-year-old dismissed customs officer for allegedly running an international drug syndicate trafficking high-grade hydroponic marijuana from Thailand to India via Dubai. The accused, identified as Rohit Kumar Sharma, was caught with 21.5 kilograms of hydroponic marijuana worth Rs.27.24 crore and Rs.44.42 lakh in cash. Police also seized a Mahindra XUV700. According to DCP (Crime) Sanjeev Kumar Yadav, Sharma used his customs experience and contacts to smuggle drugs through low-footfall airports such as Guwahati, operating a supply chain across Thailand, Dubai, and India. Acting on a tip-off, police arrested him near Janak Cinema in west Delhi, recovering the contraband during follow-up searches. The seized drug, police said, has a tetrahydrocannabinol (THC) content of 30-40%, nearly ten times stronger than regular marijuana.
