After 2.5 years, MCD clears stuck public utility projects
New Delhi, July 17 -- The standing committee of the Municipal Corporation of Delhi (MCD) on Wednesday approved long-delayed infrastructure proposals after over two and a half years of deadlock caused by political and legal disputes over the panel's formation. This was only the second meeting of the newly constituted committee, which reviewed over 130 proposals and cleared 23, officials said.
Key approvals include an automated multilevel puzzle parking facility for 188 vehicles at Bharat Darshan Park, Punjabi Bagh, expected to reduce congestion near the tourist spot. The panel also cleared a project for operating and maintaining streetlights in the south, central, west, and Najafgarh zones. "This will help upgrade the LED streetlight network in areas formerly under the South MCD," said a senior official.
Committee chairperson Satya Sharma announced the "One Road - One Day" initiative, under which "one major road in each zone will be fully revamped daily starting September 1."
A long-stalled plan for an ingesta and dung drying plant at the Ghazipur slaughterhouse was also approved, along with 17 backhoe loaders and 24 mechanical road sweepers. Sharma ordered illegal meat shops near schools and religious places be shut. A community dog policy and a sanitation boost in the Central zone were also approved. Of 70 layout plan proposals, only one-for a DTC bus depot-was cleared.
Aam Aadmi Party (AAP), meanwhile, raised issues around waterlogging, MCD schools, and staff shortages....
