New Delhi, May 22 -- The General Purposes Committee of the Delhi Assembly, chaired by speaker Vijender Gupta, on Wednesday unanimously adopted a proposal to install portraits of Veer Vinayak Damodar Savarkar, Maharshi Dayanand Saraswati, and Pandit Madan Mohan Malaviya in the Vidhan Sabha premises. The move followed Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) MLA Abhay Verma's proposal, recognising the trio's contributions to India's freedom struggle, social reform, and education. "The unanimous decision. reflects the Assembly's collective resolve to preserve democratic ideals and promote a deep-rooted sense of national pride, cultural heritage, and civic responsibility," Gupta said. The committee said including Savarkar was "both respectful and appropriate". The meeting triggered a political row, with Aam Aadmi Party (AAP)alleging the BJP blocked its verbal proposal to honour Savitribai Phule. "But the BJP did not allow this proposal to be passed. Why?
