India, Feb. 4 -- The Supreme Court on Monday told Centre and states it will not tolerate steps that leads to the reduction of forest cover after petitions alleged that the compensatory afforestation scheme under the revised Forest Conservation Act envisaged compensatory afforestation to be carried out in 'unclassed' forest land. Hearing a bunch of petitions challenging the 2023 amendments to the Forest Conservation Act, 1980 (FCA), the bench said, "Till further orders, no steps shall be taken by the Union government or states that will lead to reduction of forest land unless compensatory afforestation land is provided by Centre or states."
