MUMBAI, Aug. 17 -- Citizens woke up on Saturday to the aftermath of its rainiest night since 2020, as torrential downpour battered Mumbai between Friday night and early Saturday morning. Several neighbourhoods recorded over 200 mm of rainfall, prompting the India Meteorological Department (IMD) to upgrade its warning from orange (heavy to very heavy rain) to red (extremely heavy rain, likely to cause disruption and damage). The downpour also brought tragedy in its wake - at around 2.30 am, a landslide at Parksite in Vikhroli claimed the lives of two members of a family and left two others injured. Through the day, people were seen wading through waterlogged streets of Bandra, Andheri, Dadar, Chembur, Juhu, Vile Parle, Ghatkopar and on the Santacruz-Chembur Link Road, even as road and rail traffic were disrupted.
