Mumbai, April 6 -- The ball floated in from a diagonal lob across the Mumbai Football Arena pitch. Vikram Partap Singh took a few steps back to get in line to receive, but then spotted the run of teammate Hmingthanmawia Valpuia Ralte. Immediately, he signalled for the Mumbai City defender to collect the cross. Valpuia did so, without much fuss. Then came the call from Vikram to pass it forward. Vikram was the 72nd minute substitute for Mumbai City FC, in their home Indian Super League (ISL) clash against Odisha FC on Sunday. At a time when the game had started to lose its pace, Vikram, known for his speed, provided that flair. Valpuia's throughball was strong but measured. Vikram took a quick glance up and with his first touch of the ball in the match, 40 seconds after he was brought on, whipped in a perfect cross that an unmarked Lallianzuala Chhangte headed home. That moment of inspiration was enough to secure three points for the league leaders Mumbai City, as they beat Odisha FC 1-0. The hosts entered the match at the top of the table, level on 14 points with Mohun Bagan Super Giant, Jamshedpur FC and Bengaluru FC, but with a game in hand. Now after seven games in the truncated 13-match season, Mumbai City, still unbeaten, sit alone on top with 17 points. Sunday's win should not have been as tight as the scoreline suggests. The hosts were the dominant team in possession and chances created. The finishing though let them down. Noufal PN, who has been in a decent form, continued his pacy ways down the left flank while Joni Ensio Kauko and Brandon Fernandes dictated play from the midfield. But for all the flair, Odisha FC's defence stood firm, with skipper Carlos Delgado even making an important clearance to deny Jorge Ortiz's shot at an open goal in the 24th minute. The second half started on the slower side for the hosts, who struggled to create the chances they did in the first half. That's what Vikram changed. Suddenly, Mumbai City found speed in the legs again, the chances started to come once again. And so did the winning goal....
