Veteran sculptor who designed the statue of unity dies at 100
Noida, Dec. 19 -- Renowned Indian sculptor Ram Sutar, celebrated for designing Gujarat's Statue of Unity - the world's tallest statue - passed away at the age of 100 at his residence in Sector 19, Noida, late on Wednesday.
Sutar, who began his career in 1947, was among India's most prolific sculptors. Apart from the Statue of Unity, which honours Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel, he was widely acclaimed for his iconic statues of Mahatma Gandhi and Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj riding a horse.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi condoled Sutar's passing as he wrote on X, "Deeply saddened by the passing of Shri Ram Sutar Ji, a remarkable sculptor whose mastery gave India some of its most iconic landmarks, including the Statue of Unity in Kevadia. His works will always be admired as powerful expressions of India's history, culture and collective spirit... My heartfelt condolences to his family, admirers and all who were touched by his remarkable life and work."
Ram Sutar lived with his family in Sector 19, Noida. He and his son jointly ran the Fine Arts Studio, a sculpting workshop in the city. Recalling his father's final days, Anil Sutar said that even then, visiting the studio gave him immense happiness. "In his last moments, he spoke very little, but going to the sculpting studio made him happy," he said.
His last rites were performed at the Sector 94 cremation ground in Noida on Thursday at 12.30 pm. Several dignitaries, including MP Dr Mahesh Sharma, Union minister Ramdas Athawale, DCP Yamuna Prasad and district magistrate Medha Roopam, were present to pay their last respects....
