UP police raze hall owned by Bareilly violence accused
Meerut, Oct. 5 -- The Bareilly Development Authority (BDA) on Saturday demolished a banquet hall owned by one of those arrested in connection with the recent clashes linked to the "I love Muhammad" poster row, citing "violation of norms".
According to officials, the "Raza Palace" banquet hall in Zakheera is owned by one Nafees Khan, alias Dr Nafees, considered to be a close aide of Maulana Tauqeer Raza Khan - the main accused in the September 26 violence - and is among the 81 people arrested in the case.
On Saturday noon, three bulldozers broke open the main gate of "Raza Palace" to begin the demolition which lasted for three hours, said officials. The team also sealed a three-storey house in nearby Faiq Enclave, where cleric Tauqeer Raza allegedly took refuge before his arrest.
BDA vice chairman Manikandan A said the building was constructed in violation of norms. "The action has been taken strictly according to legal procedure. It is not targeted at any individual."
The action caused a stir among local residents. A nameplate outside the venue drew attention, displaying the name of caretaker Shoaib Beg and his late father Athhar Beg, with the additional designation "former PCS officer".
BDA officials said they had issued a notice on October 1, directing Baradari police to get the premises vacated before October 3. However, no action was taken until Saturday afternoon, following which they carried out the sealing operation.
Violent clashes had erupted in Bareilly on September 26 when over 2,000 people had gathered outside a mosque in Bareilly's Kotwali area after Friday prayers to protest the cancellation of a proposed protest over the poster row. The protests were called by Raza Khan to protest the FIR registration by Kanpur police on September 9 over the alleged installation of "I Love Muhammad" boards during a Barawafat procession....
