KANPUr, March 20 -- A contractual sanitation worker of the psychiatry ward of the Saifai-based Uttar Pradesh University of Medical Sciences (UPUMS) has been arrested on charges of rape after a 38-year-old deaf and mute woman, admitted in the ward since June 2025, was found to be 19 weeks pregnant during a routine examination, officers familiar with the matter said on Thursday. Taking cognisance of the incident, the university said it has constituted an internal committee to examine the role of its staff member. According to people familiar with the matter, the pregnancy was detected on March 18 during a routine check-up, following which department head Dr Arun Kumar Mishra ordered further tests which confirmed that she was 19 weeks pregnant.
