Tiann, Aditya capture U-15 singles badminton crowns
MUMBAI, Dec. 23 -- The big match temperament of third seed Tiann Castellino was on display against top seed Anvisha Ghorpade, as she scored an upset win in three games to lift the Girls U-15 singles title in Yonex-Sunrise Gautam Thakkar Memorial Junior State Badminton Championships, sponsored by Cricket for Care at the Bombay Gymkhana late on Sunday.
The young shuttlers were cheered on by a star-studded crowd, among them close friends of the late Gauram Thakkar, Sunil Gavaskar and Aparna Popat, to name a few. The event was promoted by Badminton Gurukul.
After losing the first game 17-21,Tiann made a strong comeback in the closely-fought second. Tiann kept her nerves in the final stages to close out the game 22-20. Tiann then took the decider rather easily to emerge a 17-21, 22-20, 21-14 winner.
Boys U-15 top seed Aditya Padwal also had a scare against Chandranshu Gundle when he dropped the second game, but that proved a temporary setback as he collected his wits to win the decider and close out the match 21-17, 15-21, 21-15. Padwal bagged a creditable double when he partnered with Gundle to defeat Sairaj Samant and Sumedh Surve 16-21, 21-10, 21-12.
In the Girls U-13 final, Riddhi Khopkar beat top seed Spruha Jpshi 21-15, 12-21, 22-20.
RR Educational Trust, Mulund, beat St Rocks High School by 30 runs in a third round match of the MSSA inter-school Giles Shield cricket tournament.

Shivaji Park Gymkhana will be conducting selection trials for their SPG Rose Merc Cricket Academy for boys in U-14, U-16 and U-19 categories. The trials for U-14 boys will be held on Jan 8, at 7.30 am, U-19 boys on Jan 9th and U-16 boys on Jan 10th. The academy headed by SPG stalwart and former India cricketer Pravin Amre will provide free training.
The Bishop's Co-Ed School Undri, Pune, and St Anthony's School were crowned the boys' and girls' teams champions, respectively, of the Mumbai-leg of the ACG Jr. NBA 3v3 National Tournament, a nationwide school-based tournament for U-14 age category.
The top two boys' and girls' teams and one all-star team from both the boys' and girls' divisions advanced to the National Finals Tournament....
