Tejashwi's 'name missing' claim stirs row, and a fact-check by EC
PATNA, Aug. 3 -- Leader of the opposition in Bihar assembly and RJD leader Tejashwi Yadav stirred a row on Saturday by claiming that his name was missing in the draft electoral rolls published in the poll-bound state. However, after the Election Commission of India (ECI), rebutted the claim and termed it "factually incorrect", the Opposition leader insisted that there was a "change" in EPIC number allotted to him.
The controversy erupted after Yadav demonstrated at a press conference that an online search, with the help of his EPIC number on Election Commission's website, was yielding the result "no records found". "The booth level officer (BLO) who visited my place did not give me any receipt of the enumeration form that I had filled up. But I had got myself photographed while handing over my enumeration forms to her."
He added: "Now look! I am not registered as a voter. This disqualifies me from contesting elections. Perhaps, I cease to be treated as a citizen and stand deprived of the right to live in this house."
Shortly afterwards, the EC dubbed Yadav's claims as "baseless". "He should ask the 47,506 booth-level agents of his party to file claims and objections if they find that the name of any eligible voter is left out or if the name of any ineligible voter has been included," the EC said.
However, later, when journalists approached Yadav with queries, he said: "The special intensive revision (SIR), of which the draft electoral rolls are a part, is indeed a fraud. I would like to know how the administration managed to change my EPIC number in the draft electoral rolls."
But officials familiar with the matter hit back, saying: "Yadav used the electoral roll with EPIC No. RAB0456228 for filing his nomination papers on affidavit in 2020. His name is there in the Draft Electoral Rolls published as per SIR on 1 Aug. His baseless argument that his name was removed has already been refuted by ECI. He was having this EPIC number even in the electoral Roll in 2015. His name with this EPIC number exists in the draft Electoral Rolls. The other EPIC number - RAB2916120 has been found to be non-existing. More than 10 years old records have been checked. No records have been found for the second EPIC number yet. It is highly likely that the second EPIC was never made through an official channel."...
