tax on power doubled to raise Rs.834-cr for solar pumps
MUMBAI, Oct. 1 -- The state government has almost doubled the additional tax on the sale of electricity to commercial and industrial users to enable it to raise funds to provide solar pumps to farmers across Maharashtra.
The decision, taken in a cabinet meeting on Tuesday, comes on the back of shortage of funds in the state's coffers, thanks to the welfare schemes introduced ahead of the assembly election.
The government currently taxes these consumers at the rate of 11.04 paise per unit. It has now been hiked by 9.90 paise per unit, in the hope of raising Rs.834 crore per year, to help meet its targets under the PM Kusum scheme, which provides solar pumps to farmers.P7...
