MUMBAI, Jan. 21 -- The sessions court on Monday extended till February 5 the interim protection from arrest granted to nine Tata Institute of Social Sciences (TISS) students who are facing criminal proceedings for organising a programme in October 2025 to mark the death anniversary of former Delhi University professor and human rights activist GN Saibaba. Additional Sessions Judge Manoj B Oza adjourned the hearing on Monday on the students' anticipatory bail pleas, continuing the interim relief granted earlier. The judge interacted with the accused students, who were present in court in compliance with earlier directions, during the hearing. He cautioned them about potential consequences of the criminal proceedings pending against them - such cases could affect future employment opportunities, including government service, and would require disclosure even for private sector jobs, the judge said. Saibaba was accused of having links with the proscribed CPI (Maoist), but was acquitted by the Bombay High Court in March 2024; the Supreme Court subsequently upheld the acquittal, saying the high court order was "well-reasoned". He passed away on October 12, 2024....
