State appoints members for Jadhav committee on three-language policy
MUMBAI, Sept. 6 -- After a two-month delay, the state government has appointed seven members to the high-powered committee headed by noted economist and academic prof Narendra Jadhav, tasked with reviewing Maharashtra's three-language policy. The committee has been given three months to submit its report, according to a GR issued on Friday.
The government had first announced the formation of the committee on June 30, in the wake of widespread criticism over the abrupt implementation of the three-language formula in the state curriculum. The newly appointed members include former chairperson of the state language advisory committee Sadanand More, National School of Drama director Waman Kendre, educationist Aparna Morris, Madhushri Savaji, Deccan College's language sciences head Sonali Kulkarni, and child psychologist Bhushan Shukla. Sanjay Yadav, state project director of the Samagra Shiksha Abhiyan, will serve as the committee's member-secretary.
The controversy over the three-language policy erupted on April 16, when the government mandated Hindi as a compulsory third language in all Marathi and English-medium schools.
Following strong opposition, an amended resolution was issued on June 17, stating that Hindi would remain the third language, but students could opt for another language if at least 20 students from a class made such a request....
