NAGPUR, April 4 -- A State Reserve Police Force (SRPF) officer was killed and his relative was injured in Nagpur on Friday when the boyfriend of the officer's daughter and his accomplices allegedly attacked them with sharp weapons. The incident occurred hours after the officer confronted the boyfriend during Hanuman Jayanti celebrations on Thursday night, and five persons including the boyfriend have been arrested, police said. According to the MIDC police, the deceased, Pankaj Thakur, 42, was an officer of Assistant Sub Inspector rank. He had objected several times over two years to his 16-year-old daughter's relationship with the accused, 23-year-old Akash Haridas Mandal, leading to frequent tension at home. On Thursday night, during a Hanuman Jayanti programme at a temple in the Matoshree Nagar area, Mandal allegedly approached the girl and began speaking to her, prompting Thakur to intervene and ask him to leave, investigators said. "This led to a heated argument between the two. Enraged by the confrontation, Mandal returned later at night with a knife, accompanied by his brother, Harshit, and other relatives and friends. They attacked Thakur with sharp weapons. When Thakur's brother-in-law, 30-year-old Arpit, tried to intervene, he too was assaulted," said Gokul Mahajan, senior Inspector, MIDC police station. Both the injured men were rushed to the Shalinitai Meghe Hospital, where doctors declared Thakur dead on arrival. Arpit was critical and undergoing treatment, Mahajan said. Police have arrested five persons in connection with the murder, including Mandal, his brother and their mother. A case of murder has been registered, and investigators are gathering evidence to establish the exact sequence of events and motive behind the brutal attack, Mahajan noted....
