MUMBAI, Dec. 10 -- The Mumbai fire department will launch a special fire-safety campaign in hotels and other recreational establishments, and even housing societies, from December 22-28, when year-end festivities are at their peak. The move comes after a recent fire at a nightclub in Goa led to 25 deaths. Fire safety inspections will cover restaurants, hotels, bars, pubs, lodges, party halls, gymkhanas, banquet halls and malls in Mumbai, for fire-safety compliance. Establishments that fail these checks will attract action under the provisions of the Maharashtra Fire Prevention and Life Saving Measures Act (MFPLMA), 2006, said chief fire officer, Ravindra Ambulgekar. He urged establishments to maintain a fire extinguishing system as mandated, and obtain half-yearly certification from a licensed agency. Last year, the BMC had inspected 731 establishments that attract crowds, such as hotels, malls, buildings etc and initiated action against 12 of them under MFPLMA 2006. Additional municipal commissioner Ashwini Joshi said the city's fire department was equipped with state-of-the-art machinery and equipment to face the challenges posed by a city like Mumbai and it was constantly striving to prevent such accidents by leading widespread public fire safety awareness campaigns. Meanwhile, the BMC will also deploy lifeguards, boats and life-saving equipment along Mumbai's coastline on New Year' eve....
