SL arrests 14 Indian fishers, seizes boats
India, Feb. 10 -- Sri Lankan authorities have arrested 14 Indian fishermen and seized their trawlers for allegedly venturing into the territorial waters of the island nation, the country's navy said on Sunday. The arrests took place during a special operation conducted north of Mannar on Saturday, the Sri Lankan Navy said in a statement. In January, India had summoned the acting Sri Lankan high commissioner to New Delhi when five Indian fishermen were injured in firing by the Sri Lankan Navy. During Sri Lankan President Anura Kumara Dissanayake visit to India last December, the two sides had agreed to avoid "aggressive behaviour or violence" while dealing with fishermen who transgress the maritime boundary.
