Six FIRs against accused till now: SIT chief
PUNE/NASHIK, March 24 -- Three more FIRs were registered against self-styled godman Ashok Kharat on Monday, taking the total number of cases against him to six, said Tejaswi Satpute, chief of Special Investigation Team (SIT), constituted last week to probe the case.
Kharat was arrested by the Nashik city police on March 18 after a woman lodged a complaint at Sarkarwada police station, accusing him of sexually exploiting her over a period of three years. Subsequently, two additional FIRs were registered at the same police station on March 21.
In one of these cases, a former office staffer alleged that Kharat had sexually assaulted his wife. In another, a woman claimed she was raped repeatedly by Kharat between February 2020 and March 2024 after she approached him for help amid marital discord. The complainant further alleged that she became pregnant and that Kharat later administered sedatives and forced her to abort the pregnancy.
Sources in the police said that apart from the three cases, three more FIRs by women with similar allegations have been registered. However, details of which police stations the fresh complaints were filed and the specific nature of the allegations, are yet to be officially disclosed.
"There is a possibility that the police will place details of the new cases before the court on Tuesday when Kharat is produced," a police officer said on condition of anonymity.
Satpute urged more victims and witnesses to come forward. "If anyone has information related to these cases or has faced similar exploitation, they should approach the SIT. Their identity will be kept confidential," she said.
