shun poison of plastic this festive season
New Delhi, Sept. 22 -- Chinese scientists, led by Bingying Liu, have found a worrisome link between plastics and foetuses. They sampled 1,324 pregnant women and found microplastics in every single placenta.
Even worse, they found evidence that the foetus was suffering endocrine disruption, which means they were not developing normally.
Endocrine disruption means that the hormones that regulate several functions of the body are hijacked by chemicals, such as those found in various plastics. This impacts growth, reproduction and several other functions- vital to living well.
Where does all this plastic come from? Essentially, from our own everyday trash. From the plastic gift wrapping materials we use, the fleece we wear, to plastic containers and chewy toys. It attributed about 500 years to plastics.
The truth is, never - because the forever chemicals in it leach out and contaminate both humans and other species. As we enter the festive season, this science should serve as a guiding star to everyone-from corporate gift-givers to simple shoppers.
My question is: is this enough? If, as a people, we are unable to link health with wealth, and if we are unable to back our prayers with tangible, intelligent action....
