Serial fraudster with over 100 cases held; cops find Rs.1.2-cr gold
NAVI MUMBAI, Nov. 5 -- After a two-month long investigation, the police have arrested a fraudster from Pune who has been impersonating police officers to cheat people. The police recovered 1,186 grams of gold jewellery worth over Rs.1.25 crore from the accused, and said that he has committed at least 15 cases of impersonation related frauds.
According to the Navi Mumbai crime branch, the accused Sajjad Garibshah Irani ,47, was booked on July 31, for posing as a cop and stealing jewellery worth Rs.1.5 lakh. "The team scrutinized 20-25 days of CCTV footage and eventually identified a motorcycle which the accused had used," said ACP Ajay Landge. They reached Pune on October 12, where the accused's wife, Fiza Sajjad Irani was detained for attempting to sell stolen gold ornaments. Along with jewellery the police seized fake ID cards, Aadhaar cards, PAN cards, and the motorcycle too. During his interrogation, Irani confessed to committing several such crimes across the region.
"He has over 100 criminal cases and prior cases under the MCOCA," said Gunjal. The police arrested Irani on October 28, and he has been remanded to police custody till November 6....
