India, Sept. 26 -- The last two weeks have been election time at the city's premier sports clubs, with the Royal Western India Turf Club (RWITC) and Willingdon Club having completed their annual general meetings (AGM) last week, and the Cricket Club of India and Bombay Gymkhana would be done with theirs by the time this appears in print. The RWITC - which became infamous for its hostile electioneering and over the top parties to woo the electorate - was the only one from the above quartet to not only have no election for the nine seats on its board for the third year running, but to also have its AGM on Zoom rather than in person, scoffing at its one chance a year to meet the members and have some semblance of debate. Good governance surely demanded that formality. The two controversial amendments to the club's articles - one, to increase members' children fees by five times and two, to allow jockeys and trainers to hold a dual license (unfathomable why it was even approved by the Stewards, when greater reforms are needed) - were expectedly shown the door with less than a third of eligible voters even casting a vote. With assents of just 30% and 17%, respectively, it was way below the threshold of 75% needed to pass. The committee was perhaps emboldened in placing these for approval by not having to face the electorate and were indeed saved the blushes if there were one! It is rare for our city to have probably the world's greatest sprinter, the eight-time Olympic gold medallist Usain Bolt, in our midst as a guest of a sports company. Despite his enormously packed schedule, it would have been a treat to have him come for racing, a sport which blends both speed and stamina. It is now less than two weeks for the season's piece de resistance - the Pune Derby. Glorious Dancer, hitherto not considered a classic prospect, comes right into the classic picture with a romp home in the lead up. It remains to be seen if Fynbos, who is considered the best juvenile in India, will take a chance or be rested for the Indian classics. Another impressive winner, Arrived, one learns, is headed to Hyderabad for the Deccan Derby, and the SA Poonawalla's first three Baychimo, Zacharias and Gunsmoke could be live dangers by the time the big race dawns....
