Kolkata, Dec. 25 -- Union minister Shantanu Thakur's remarks that names of 100,000 Matua voters could be deleted in the process to flush out five million Rohingyas and Bangladeshis during the special intensive revision (SIR) of electoral rolls in West Bengal has triggered a political row in the eastern state. "Which is more beneficial? One lakh people from our community (Matua) need to temporarily refrain from exercising their voting rights in a bid to flush out five million Rohingyas, Bangladeshis and Pakistani Muslims," Thakur reportedly said at a Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) rally at Hanskhali in Nadia district on Monday. On Wednesday, a scuffle broke out between supporters of Thakur, who is a BJP lawmaker, and Trinamool Congress Rajya Sabha member Mamata Bala Thakur. Both leaders are from Matua community. "We have seen in the media that he has said that one lakh names of Matua voters could be deleted. Some of the people from the Matua community went to seek an answer from the Union minister. Is this a crime?" said the TMC member.
