Ram Mandir records 39degC as city swelters in heatwave
Mumbai, March 24 -- Parts of the city recorded heatwave-like conditions on Monday, with Ram Mandir hitting 39degC and Vikhroli 37.6degC, prompting the Indian Meteorological Department (IMD) to upgrade the city's alert from hot and humid to heatwave-like in the afternoon.
Santacruz, the city's base weather station, recorded a maximum of 36.5degC, three degrees above normal.
Other highs included Vidyavihar at 36.8degC, Dahisar 35.4degC, Chembur 35.6degC, and Byculla 34.2degC.
South Mumbai remained relatively cooler, with Colaba registering 34.9degC, 1.7 degrees above normal.
Meanwhile, night temperatures stayed near normal, with minimums of 21.6degC in Santacruz and 23.7degC in Colaba.
Sushma Nair, senior scientist at IMD Mumbai, attributed the spike to an anticyclonic circulation over Mumbai and neighbouring areas, combined with easterly winds.
