MUMBAI, Nov. 23 -- BJP workers led by city unit president Ameet Satam on Saturday protested near Shiv Sena founder Bal Thackeray's under-construction memorial at Shivaji Park, alleging that the "politics of language" unleashed by Uddhav and Raj Thackeray was responsible for the suicide of the 19-year-old college student on Tuesday. The youngster, who was lampooned by commuters on a local train, for not speaking in Marathi, allegedly died by suicide out of fear and distress the same evening. The BJP workers went to the memorial on Saturday afternoon and carried out their protest in front of a garlanded photograph of the deceased. Wearing black bands over their mouths, they prayed for 'sadbuddhi' (wisdom) for the Thackeray cousins' parties, the Shiv Sena (UBT) and the Maharashtra Navnirman Sena (MNS), and criticised their politics of language. Soon after, Shiv Sena (UBT) activists led by Kishori Pednekar struck back by performing a pooja at the site. The father of the deceased teen, said that his son had had an altercation with some passengers in a local train, who aggressively asked the youngster if he was ashamed of speaking in Marathi. The Kolsewadi police have filed an accidental death report and recorded the father's statement. Kishori Pednekar reached the memorial soon after the protest and offered floral tributes to Bal Thackeray. "It is good that the BJP came to the memorial," she said. "Their politics doesn't end till they bring up Balasaheb's name. Now we will pay homage to A B Vajapyee, Pramod Mahajan and Gopinath Munde." Another Sena (UBT) leader Sushama Andhare accused the BJP of politicising the issue in order to blame the Thackerays. "Dividing people is in the BJP's DNA," she said. "They can't talk about the real issues faced by people. On the same lines, offences must be registered against chief minister Devendra Fadnavis and the BJP for all the deaths due to the Maratha agitation." Deputy chief minister and Shiv Sena leader Eknath Shinde spoke to the deceased's parents via a video call on Saturday and assured them that action would be taken in the case. When contacted, Mumbai MNS president Sandeep Deshpande said that the BJP was resorting to "low-level politics". Sena (UBT) MLA Aaditya Thackeray had earlier refrained from commenting on the student's death....
