Rainwater floods KEM Hospital; patients sit in ankle-deep water
MUMBAI, May 27 -- Monday's intense rainfall severely affected civic-run KEM Hospital in Parel, flooding key areas and disrupting services. Water entered several ground-floor wards and diagnostic units, including MRI, X-ray, and sonography sections, causing major inconvenience to patients and staff.
Hospital sources reported water seeping under beds in the medicine ward, while standing water collected in multiple sections. Pumps were deployed, but drainage issues slowed the process. Ward No 1 of the Paediatric ICU was also affected, a staffer confirmed.
Patients' families, many of whom travel long distances and carry belongings for extended stays, reported damage to personal items due to the flooding.
"Crores of rupees were spent on KEM's centenary celebrations and beautification, but basic infrastructure is ignored," said MNS worker Dilip Dalvi, blaming poor pre-monsoon maintenance.
Visitors also questioned the prioritisation of cosmetic upgrades-like fountains and landscaping-over essential repairs, calling for urgent attention to drainage and emergency systems. htc...
