Rains batter Jammu, damage Kathua bridge
JAMMU/srinagar, Aug. 25 -- Torrential overnight rainfall battered Jammu on Sunday, submerging neighbourhoods, damaging houses and roads, and disrupting life across several districts. Officials said a vital bridge over the Sahar Khad river on the Jammu-Pathankot national highway was damaged after a pillar gave way, forcing traffic diversions. Jammu district recorded 190.4 mm of rain in 24 hours till 8.30 am, while Katra and Kathua received 115.4 mm and 90 mm respectively. In Lower Roop Nagar, nearly 50 houses were inundated, and land near a temple on the Tawi banks caved in. The girls' hostel of the Indian Institute of Integrated Medicines was also flooded, compelling 45 students to take refuge on higher floors before being rescued by SDRF personnel using boats in a five-hour operation.P6...
