Badlapur, July 28 -- For the passengers on Mahalaxmi Express, relief at being rescued by the National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) was mixed with frustration at not receiving information and updates from the Railways. Mahalaxmi Express got stranded between Badlapur and Vangani between 3am and 4am in the morning. "It was dark outside when the train got stuck. We could not figure out what went wrong. We tried flashing our mobiles' light and saw water everywhere. This is how we figured out the track was flooded. However, we had no idea about the water level. We tried calling the toll free numbers, but there was no response," said Appasaheb Patil, 40, who had come from Kolhapur to Mumbai for medical treatment and was returning to Kolhapur by Mahalaxmi Express. "Early morning, we saw the water level and panicked as there was no hope of getting out of the train. I cannot eat outside food due to the ailment. All I ate till Saturday evening was fruit," said Patil who was travelling with his wife Asmita, 35. Vaibhav Dhate,38, who was travelling to Kolhapur from Thane with his wife and sevenyear-old son, was not able to take their luggage from the train while being rescued, but Dhate praised the NDRF for the care they took of passengers. " The rescue team insisted on each passenger taking water, food and even giving their umbrellas to us for our safety. People complained about lack of communication, but the rescue done by the entire team is truly appreciable. Locals were also very helpful as they took care of us till we got to a vehicle," he said. Some passengers complained that they were unable to get any information from the Railways's helplines and social media accounts. One passenger, who did not want to be named, said, "The train initially halted at Ambernath railway station for hours as there was water logging on the track. We saw commuters walking on the track. If this was the situation, the Railways should have been alerted before resuming the express train. How did they not realise about the waterlogging?"...
