Pune builders robbed of Rs.25L by fake cops in Chembur
Mumbai, May 5 -- In a dramatic daylight con, a Pune-based real estate developer and his partner were duped of Rs.25 lakh in Chembur after a gang posing as police officers-armed with toy guns and sticks-staged a fake raid and fled with the cash. Nehru Nagar police have arrested one suspect on Sunday and are on the hunt for five others believed to be part of the elaborate scheme.
The complainant, S Khambe, 43, and his business partner A Karande were lured with a promise of doubling their investment. The duo was introduced to Pravin Mungse, who claimed he could help them double Rs.25 lakh. On April 30, they travelled to Mumbai with the cash-Rs.16.5 lakh from Khambe and Rs.8.5 lakh from Karande.
They first met Mungse and his associate Dashrath Lohote in Chembur. The group proceeded to Swastik Chembur, where another accused, Mukund Jha, joined briefly. After discussions, Khambe and Karande were told to wait until 4:30pm for the transaction.
Later that afternoon, two new suspects joined them and led them near Pragati Building on the Eastern Express Highway, under the pretext of completing the deal. As Khambe showed the money, four men arrived in a car wielding sticks and toy guns, posing as police officers. They grabbed the cash and shouted at the victims to follow them to the police station. The gang sped away towards Thane. Despite a brief chase, the victims lost sight of the vehicle and later filed a complaint at Nehru Nagar police station.
Police have identified several suspects through CCTV footage. Senior inspector Ankush Khedkar confirmed the main accused has prior cases in Mumbai and Pune involving similar cons. A case under relevant sections of the BNS has been registered, and efforts are underway to nab the remaining accused....
