Mumbai, Nov. 7 -- On a day Indian hopefuls Nihal Sarin and Raunak Sadhwani crashed out of the FIDE World Cup, R Praggnanandhaa staged a gritty comeback under pressure to advance to the third round in Goa. The third-seeded Indian (Elo 2771) was tested by the Uzbek-Australian GM Temur Kuybokarov (2535) in the rapid tie-breaks. After a drawn first set in which Pragg escaped from a losing position in the final game, he found himself in a hole after losing the first game of the second segment with white. Pragg delivered a victory on demand with black to take the contest to the blitz tie-break, which he won. Sarin (2700) lost to Greek Stamatis Kourkoulos-Arditis (2583), while teen Sadhwani (2641) was defeated by Armenian Robert Hovhannisyan (2633). Vidit Gujrathi finally got past Argentine prodigy Faustino Oro in the second rapid game. htc...
