Palghar fishermen to be eyes and ears for naval security
MUMBAI, May 10 -- With a history of terrorists entering the city using sea route (those involved in the 26/11 attacks gained entry into Mumbai through the sea after hijacking a fishing boat), the state government issued directives for fishermen on Friday. While seeking their cooperation in tracking suspicious activities, the government also asked them to avoid certain restricted zones near the sea, particularly near Palghar district.
A meeting between naval security forces and state government officials was held to discuss safety measures for fishermen operating in Palghar's territorial waters as the area is accessible to Pakistan by sea - in fact, 18 fishermen from the district were arrested by Pakistan authorities for entering into their area, even though by mistake, between 2020-21. Although their sentence ended in 2022-23, they remain in Pakistani prisons.
"Directives have been issued to Palghar district administration, as in the past many fishermen from here were arrested by Pakistan, and their boats seized. Naval security has defined restricted areas for their safety. The administration will communicate the details to fishermen's societies so that they may continue with their business without compromising their safety," said a government official, who was a part of the meeting.
"We have also urged fishermen to work as our eyes and ears for naval security. Additionally, coast guards' boats in mid-sea will issue directives to them when the need arises," the official added. "The directives are also applicable to all fishermen along the state's coast."...
