Opposition, BJP spar over voter rolls in Maharashtra
MUMBAI, Nov. 4 -- Amid the Opposition's campaign against alleged vote theft, Shiv Sena (UBT) chief Uddhav Thackeray on Monday announced that his party would set up "voter identification centres" at the shakha or local branch level to prevent bogus voting.
"The centres will become operational once the voter list for the local body election comes out. Our party workers and local leaders will undertake voter verification drives in every area," said Thackeray at a press conference, two days after opposition parties showed their strength on Saturday by organising a "truth march" in Mumbai to raise their voice against alleged vote theft.
Reacting to Thackeray's announcement, Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) minister Ashish Shelar also held a press conference, where he presented examples of "repeated voters" (those entered on the lists of multiple booths), mainly Muslim, in 31 assembly constituencies, and claimed that these had helped opposition candidates win the Lok Sabha polls.
