Pune, June 17 -- The police and local trekker groups on Monday continued search operations at the site of a bridge collapse over the Indrayani River in Pune district, even as the National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) ended its efforts, stating that all missing persons had been accounted for. Four people died and 18 were seriously injured when the 32-year-old iron bridge in Maval tehsil collapsed on Sunday afternoon. The bridge, located in Kundamala, had become a popular tourist spot. According to officials, it gave way around 3.30 pm due to overcrowding, with over 100 people on it despite warning signs and a ban on large gatherings. Heavy rains in recent days had strengthened the river's flow. "We're continuing search operations with local groups as a precaution, in case anyone is still trapped," said senior inspector Pradip Rayannawar of Talegaon Dabhade Police Station. He added that five motorcycles fell into the river during the collapse and their owners have been traced; most are hospitalised. "Unfortunately, many visitors ignore warnings issued by police and locals, risking their lives," Rayannawar said. The district administration confirmed that 51 people were rescued; 18 remain hospitalised with serious injuries. Pune Collector Jitendra Dudi stated that the bridge had previously been declared unsafe, but crowds gathered there for selfies and leisure despite signage. He added that a committee will be formed to investigate whether there were administrative lapses and to examine if standard operating procedures were properly enforced. The incident has highlighted ongoing challenges in ensuring tourist safety at local attractions....
