Mumbai take complete control vs Puducherry
MUMBAI, Nov. 18 -- Siddhesh Lad continued his sterling run this season, smashing 170 to power Mumbai to a massive first innings total of 630/5 against a hapless Puducherry bowling attack on Day 2 of their Ranji Trophy Elite League Group D match at the Wankhede Stadium on Monday.
Wicket-keeper batter Akash Anand scored an unbeaten 107 (122 balls, eight fours), Sarfaraz Khan hit 67 (113b, six fours, one six) and captain Shardul Thakur hammered a quickfire 32-ball 56 (three fours, four sixes) to bury Puducherry under a heap of runs.
Pacer Thakur then struck three early blows to leave the visitors reeling at 43/4 as Mumbai took complete control of the game. He struck on the very first delivery, cleaning up Neyan Kangayan by swinging the ball across his blade to hit the off-stump. On his third ball, Thakur nailed Paras Ratnaparkhe leg before wicket before having Anand Singh Bais (5) caught behind for fine figures of 3/17.
Resuming the day on 317/3, Lad and Khan continued to bat fluently. The two stretched their fourth wicket partnership from 80 to 160 before Khan fell against the run of play, suffering a lapse in concentration. Lad, however, treated the crowd to brilliant strokeplay. With the ball coming onto the bat nicely, he played some glorious strokes all around the wicket.
While his cover drives were a treat to watch, he completed his century by clipping the ball between mid-on and midwicket for four.
It was his 13th first-class hundred, and third of the season. Having started the campaign with a century (116) against Jammu & Kashmir, he scored 127 in the previous match against Himachal Pradesh.
It is also his highest first-class score, bettering his previous highest by one run. He looked on course for a double when he sliced a wide delivery off Sabhay Chadda to deep third man, Anand Sigh, at the total of 507, ending a fifth wicket partnership of 110 with Anand.
For Anand, it was his third first-class century in nine matches as Mumbai's batting line-up has looked more settled this season.
