Mhatre hits 69* for Mumbai in Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy
New Delhi, Dec. 7 -- Holders Mumbai, led by young opener Ayush Mhatre's 39-ball 69* after skipper Shardul Thakur's 3/19, beat Chhattisgarh by eight wickets in Group A match of the Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy while Puducherry crushed Bengal by 81 runs, off-spinner Jayant Yadav's four wickets helping dismiss them for 96.
Mumbai openers Ayush and India's batting stalwart Ajinkya Rahane (40 off 28 balls) were involved in an 82-run stand as the reigning champions reached the target in 15.5 overs for the loss of two wickets. By the time Chhattisgarh leg-spinner Shubham Agarwal got the better of Rahane, Mumbai were well on course for an easy win.
With one more round to go, Mumbai (20 points), who have won five of their six games, and Andhra (20) advanced to the next stage.
Delhi's hopes of building on their win against Karnataka two days earlier were dashed as Rajasthan pulled off a last-ball win on Saturday. Delhi managed a challenging 175/5 with useful contributions down the order and then had Rajasthan needing 37 runs off 16 balls. However, Mukul Choudhary's unbeaten 26-ball 62 (1x4, 7x6) sealed the result in Group D.
India T20 keeper Sanju Samson struck an unbeaten 73 (56b) but his efforts went in vain as Andhra beat Kerala by seven wickets, reaching the target in just 12 overs. Samson batted from start to finish but seven other batters didn't reach double digits as Kerala managed only 119/7 in 20 overs, and Andhra chased down the target without ado. Haryana beat a Hardik Pandya-less Baroda by eight runs. Baroda, chasing 175 to win, were restricted to 164 with Hardik rested ahead of the T20I series vs South Africa.
In Group B, Goa upstaged J&K by seven wickets in Kolkata while Jharkhand beat Tamil Nadu by 28 runs and Saurashtra beat Karnataka by one-run, both in Group D.
Kumar Kushagra (84) and Virat Singh (72 ) helped Jharkhand reach a total of 207/3. In reply, TN suffered a batting collapse.
