Manipur parties say no delimitation on 2001 data
Imphal, May 13 -- Several political parties of Manipur on Monday held a meeting with governor Ajay Kumar Bhalla and expressed reservations about delimitation, saying that it should not be held based on the 2001 census data.
Bhalla assured the representatives of 15 political parties that the memorandum submitted by them objecting to the ongoing delimitation process in the state will be forwarded to the Union government.
During the meeting at the Imphal-based Raj Bhavan, the delegation led by former deputy chief minister Yumnam Joykumar, who is also the president of the Manipur unit of the National People's Party (NPP), submitted a memorandum and the parties demanded that the delimitation process be based on accurate census data.
Though the BJP and the Congress did not attend the meeting, the two parties had also claimed earlier that 2001 enumeration report was erroneous and they are opposed to holding of delimitation based on that.
Speaking to reporters at the NPP state head office in Imphal West, Joykumar said the meeting lasted about an hour, during which the delegation highlighted the urgent need to defer the delimitation exercise until a proper and up-to-date census is conducted not earlier than 2026.
The memorandum objected to the proposed delimitation exercise based on what it described as "inaccurate, inflated, and erroneous data from the 2001 Census of India, specifically in the context of Manipur". It called for deferment until a new and accurate census is completed....
