Local heroes brave Ulhas river to rescue stranded shepherds
Thane, May 27 -- Two residents of Galegaon village rescued three shepherds who were stranded on an islet in the Ulhas river near Mohili, Kalyan, as water levels rose due to heavy rainfall on Monday.
Water levels rose and created a temporary islet where the three shepherds, Deu Gaykar, 55, Shankar Patil 55, and Savalaram Waghe 60, who managed to guide their cattle and goats to safety, were surrounded by water for nearly three hours due to the water current.
The Kalyan Dombivli Municipal Corporation (KDMC) fire brigade team, said that launching a rescue boat would endanger the lives of rescuers and victims due to the current. "We were monitoring the situation for a safe opportunity," said a KDMC fire brigade official.
Meanwhile, two locals, Gurunath Pawar, 26, and his younger brother Rohan Pawar, 24, from a traditional fishing background, familiar with the river, took their boat to rescue the trio. "Despite the risks, we took the boat because we know this river ," said Gurunath.
Recognising their brave act, Sachin Shejal, Kalyan tahsildar, felicitated the local heroes with a shawl, coconut, and a cash reward....
