India, March 24 -- Heavy passenger congestion at the New Delhi Railway Station led to a "near-stampede" situation at platform numbers 12 and 13 due to delay in the departure of multiple trains on Sunday, police said. Deputy commissioner of police (railways) KPS Malhotra said, "There was no stampede. Due to delay in the departure of at least four trains, there was heavy rush of passengers on the two platforms. The situation eased soon after the trains left New Delhi." A second official said necessary crowd control measures had to be promptly taken to avoid any untoward incidents.
