Gujarat resident arrested with whale vomit worth Rs.80 lakh
Mumbai, Dec. 22 -- A man from Gujarat was arrested on Saturday for allegedly illegally possessing 627 grams of ambergris, commonly known as whale vomit, valued at around Rs.80 lakh. Ambergris, a substance formed in the digestive system of male whales and prized for its use as a fragrance enhancer, is a protected wildlife product. It is listed under Schedule II of the Wildlife Protection Act, 1972, and its possession, transport or sale is prohibited.
According to the police, the accused Vishnu Makwana, hailing from Ahmedabad in Gujarat, was held with a brown, waxy substance by the Kurla police. They suspected it to be whale vomit and reached out to Mahendra Shantaram Gile, forest guard attached to the Sanjay Gandhi National Park, for confirmation. Subsequently, Gile reached Kurla, where the material was examined using a hot rod test and prima facie identified as ambergris. The substance was then weighed to be 627 grams, with an estimated market value of Rs.80 lakh.
Based on Gile's complaint, the Kurla police arrested Makwana under relevant sections of the Wildlife Protection Act. "We are finding the person from whom he obtained the whale vomit," said a police officer....
