Giles Shield final: Kartik, Prajwal prop up Swami Vivekanand International
MUMBAI, Jan. 21 -- Playing in front of their school legend Shardul Thakur, India all-rounder and current Mumbai captain, the Swami Vivekanand International SSC, Borivali, team posted 276 in their first innings against Dnyandeep Seva Mandal School on Day 1 of their Giles Shield MSSA inter-school final at the Brabourne Stadium on Tuesday.
Left-handed batter Kartik Chhajer scored 90 (16 fours) and Prajwal Taware made 82 (12 fours) while Shauryakant Upadhyaya contributed 48. For the Dnyandeep outfit, Anup Yadav picked a fifer, 5/76 in 20 overs, and Atharv Kalel grabbed 4/66. In reply, Dnyandeep ended Day 1 on 17/0 in 13 overs.
Thakur, who conducted the toss in front of his school coach Dinesh Lad, proved to be lucky for his former school team with the captain calling correctly. Openers Prajwal and Kartik made a bright start, sharing a 149-run partnership.
"It is great to see that the school where I studied is playing the final that too at a famous ground like the Brabourne.
"It has refreshed memories of my school cricket days, that we used to spend playing school cricket, travelling by the school bus starting from Borivali and coming to Churchgate or Shivaji Park. We used to have a lot of fun, myself, Siddhesh Lad, Harmeet Singh, Atif Attarwala.
Our school team was quite strong, we played in quite a few finals. We had some memorable victories against strong school teams like Anuman-I-Islam and Rizvi Springfield. Of course, it was our hard work and our coach, Dinesh Lad, used to make us practice well at the school ground. It was his hard work also which helped us do well. All those memories I lived in this brief moment here," said Thakur, who termed hitting six sixes in an over in the Harris Shield Plate Group final as his most special effort.
MCA President Ajinkya Naik and secretary Dr Unmesh Khanvilkar along with MSSA cricket secretary Nadim Memon and junior selectors were also in attendance on the opening day.
