Fynbos, the horse of this racing season
India, April 2 -- That the Mumbai racing season ended with no hiccups is a feather in the cap of the RWITC (Royal Western India Turf Club). It, though, cannot rest on its laurels, for challenges often creep up unexpectedly as was witnessed with glanders stopping racing at southern clubs.
The horse of the season has to be Fynbos, who won the Indian Derby and Oaks and prize money in excess of Rs.3 crore. The Invitation Cup was at her mercy but the postponed date at Mysore is uncertain as of now.
The focus is on the juveniles - the future stars. Amongst the colts, Buckingham stands out as a potential Indian Derby hopeful though both D'Artagnan, who won the Shapoorji mile, and Jaandaar, who won both his starts, are surely classic types. The latter, a got abroad bred at Sohna, as was the PBMM winner Margaretta, continued the outstanding record of Sohna bred got abroads in the biggest races of the country.
The other smart performers were Baychimo, who won thrice including the 2000-Ruia, and King's Gambit, who also won thrice and is half-sister to the multi classic winning King's Ransom. Their dam China Creek has to be special as a juvenile. Shandaar, also out of China Creek, was an impressive winner on the concluding day.
Though the professional honours went to Pesi Shroff and Trevor Patel, as expected, the surprising success stories were of trainer PS Chouhan. He has quickly graduated from the ranks of a top jockey to a top trainer, being just six short of Pesi and well clear of the third and is one to watch in the future.
Trevor skated away with the jockey's championship, though Yash Narredu, who had straight titles in Chennai, had his best Mumbai season ever, ending four behind Trevor. Yash's rides on Zuccaro and Pinaccle would probably qualify as rides of the season, if there were to be a contest for it, an idea worth considering by the stewards.
With the run up in interest of memberships entirely due to the much-anticipated club house, the RWITC should consider creating an archival room with racing memorabilia over the years - trophies, race cards, photographs - which members will gladly contribute to. And, even a mini theatre to relive the past history of racing, some films on racing classics and talks to educate the new members who have no knowledge or background of the sport. And, maybe a sports bar to show live sport and draw synergies around sport and more. There are a dozen ideas, with the objective being to get a new audience for racing....
