Mumbai, Aug. 6 -- Former Mumbai City head coach Jorge Costa, who led Porto to the Champions League title in 2004, died on Tuesday of a cardiac arrest. He was 53. A central defender in his playing days, Costa made 50 appearances for the Portuguese national team and had captained Porto to the Champions League title a year after he helped the club with the UEFA Cup. Costa was working as the director of football at Porto at the time of his death. "A leader, a fighter, and a true part of the Mumbai City family, Jorge was at the helm between 2018 and 2020," the Mumbai club posted on X. The Portuguese federation also posted on X, calling Costa "a true symbol of dedication, grit, and love for the jersey." According to Portuguese media, Costa suffered a cardiac arrest while at Porto's training centre. Fondly nicknamed Bicho, or animal, for his aggressive style of playing, Costa helped Porto win eight domestic league titles, and was captain of the Jose Mourinho-coached team that won the UEFA Cup and Champions League in back-to-back seasons. He was a part of the Portuguese team that reached the semi-finals at the 2000 European Championships. He was also an important player in the junior team that won the U-20 World Cup in 1991. In his first year as coach of Mumbai City, he led the team to third place in the 2018-19 season playoffs. The team failed to make the playoffs the following year....
