Following Pawar-Fadnavis meeting, Naik re-elected unopposed as MCA president
Mumbai, Nov. 11 -- Ajinkya Naik is set to get a second term as the president of the Mumbai Cricket Association (MCA). He will be elected unopposed to the top position, as all the other candidates have withdrawn their nominations, paving the way for his election. Monday was the last day for withdrawing the nominations for the elections scheduled on November 12.
The development took place following a meeting between NCP (SP) president Sharad Pawar and CM Devendra Fadnavis at Varsha, the official residence of the chief minister on Monday afternoon. Insiders said that both Pawar and Fadnavis arrived at a formula for the unopposed selection of the MCA president instead of a multi-corner election. The details of the formula are yet not clear.
Others in the fray for the MCA president position were BJP legislator and Fadnavis' close aide Prasad Lad, NCP (SP) legislator Jitendra Awhad, Shiv Sena (UBT) MLA Milind Narwekar, T20 Mumbai governing council chairman and Sena minister Pratap Sarnaik's son Vihang, former Indian women's team captain Diana Edulji, Suraj Samant, and former joint secretary Shahalam Shaikh. All of them withdrew their nominations for the president's post.
However, there is also a hitch. Shaikh, who is contesting for the MCA secretary position, has approached the court against Naik's nomination as MCA president. In his petition, Shaikh argued that an office-bearer who had completed two terms (six years) in any MCA post was subject to a cooling-off period. "I have demanded Naik's disqualification on these grounds, as he has completed a six-year term in two different positions," Shaikh told Hindustan Times. "The hearing was completed by the city court on Monday and the verdict had been reserved for Tuesday."
Shaikh said that he himself was a managing committee member for three years and then held the joint secretary position for three years. "After that, I had to go through a cool-off period as mandated by the MCA constitution," he stressed.
Meanwhile, Naik's unopposed election has again proved the dominance of the Sharad Pawar-led group in the most reputed and richest cricket body of the country. NCP (SP) insiders said that Ajinkya has been Pawar's choice, and his re-election has proved Pawar's strong hold on the cricket administration.
Naik won the post in a byelection last July following the untimely death of Amol Kale, Fadnavis' childhood friend. Kale had won the polls after Pawar backed him in 2022.
As per the list released by the electoral officer after the last day of withdrawals on Monday, Unmesh Khanvilkar and Shahalam Shaikh will contest for the position of MCA secretary. Both have been been former office-bearers and were in cooling off period. Nationalist Congress Party MLA Jitendra Awhad will contest against Navin Shetty for the post of vice-president.
Nilesh Bhosale will be up against Gaurav Payyade for the post of joint secretary whereas Arman Mallick, who was the treasurer in the former committee, will fight for a similar role against Surendra Shewale.
Rajdip Gupta has been appointed as the governing council chairman in T20 Mumbai League.
There are 20 candidates in the fray for councilors of Apex Council. Apart from prominent names like Milind Narvekar, Nadim Memon, Bhushan Patil, Sandeep Vichare, Neil Savant and Suraj Samat, others in the fray are Chirag Gohil, Vighnesh Kadam, Ashish Savant, Praod Yadav, Chandrashekhar Kamble, Shrikant Kamtekar, Maulik Merchant, Shafique Patel, Sameer Pethe, Sunil Ramchandran, Vikas Repale, Mangesh Satam, Arun Tawade and Sagar Tigdi....
