Fire in train carrying garbage in Kurla, services briefly disrupted
Mumbai, Jan. 9 -- A coach of a special train carrying garbage and waste material caught fire near Kurla railway station on Thursday evening, prompting emergency measures by Central Railway (CR) officials. The incident led to the temporary disruption of local train services on the Main line.
According to Central Railway officials, the fire broke out around 8.30 pm in the first coach of the special train, which was stabled on the Electric Multiple Unit (EMU) siding at Kurla. The rake is used to transport muck and garbage collected during track maintenance works. Flames quickly engulfed the coach, following which firefighting operations were initiated.
To facilitate the dousing of the fire, railway authorities switched off the overhead equipment (OHE) supplying 25,000 volts of power to trains in the affected section. The OHE was shut between Vidyavihar and Sion stations from 8.38 pm to 8.55 pm, officials said.
"We had to suspend the rail traffic on the UP Slow line towards Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj Terminus (CSMT) temporarily until the fire was extinguished. The fire was doused at 8.55 pm and soon after that the OHE was restored," said a CR official. "Services on the Kalyan-CSMT line were delayed by 10 to 15 minutes during the period."
No injuries were reported in the incident....
