FIR against students of TISS over Saibaba event
MUMBAI, Oct. 14 -- The Trombay police have registered a First Information Report (FIR) after a complaint was lodged by Tata Institute of Social Sciences (TISS) against several students and organisers of an event held on Monday to commemorate the death anniversary of writer, scholar and human rights activist G N Saibaba.
The activist, who had been accused and acquitted of Maoist links, died on October 12, 2024. The Chembur institute saw heavy police presence as officers interrogated the students. Senior police officers confirmed that the case was registered against organisers of the event and some students were being questioned. No arrest had been made till the time of going to press.
The police said the offence has been registered for unlawful assembly, raising slogans against caste and creed, deliberate disobedience of an order that is duly promulgated by a public servant.
Former Delhi University professor Saibaba was cleared of having links with Maoists by Bombay HC seven months before his death last year. The court had said the trial court proceedings were a "failure of justice". htc...
