Ex-wrestling coach, who shaped Indian stars, dies
Mumbai, June 24 -- Former wrestling coach Vladimir Mestvirishvili, who helped shaped the likes of Indian Olympic medallists Bajrang Punia, Yogeshwar Dutt and Sushil Kumar, passed away on Monday. He was in his 80s.
Mestvirishvili was the head coach of the Georgian national team between 1992 and 1992.
He was appointed as the foreign coach of the Indian team by Wrestling Federation of India (WFI) in 2003. In that capacity, he helped improve the quality of Indian wrestling. He remained with the team till 2017.
"He coached Sushil, Yogeshwar, Bajrang, Ravi, Deepak and many other top (Indian) wrestlers during their junior days. He was so dedicated and passionate. Everyone loved him," penned former India hockey captain Viren Rasquinha on X. He is also the CEO of OQG which has supported most of these wrestlers. "Vlado dedicated his life to wrestling. He would be on the mat 365 days a year. Never heard him say NO to a young kid to teach him wrestling techniques."...
