ED summons Raina in probe into online betting apps
New Delhi, Aug. 13 -- The Enforcement Directorate (ED) has summoned cricketer Suresh Raina on Wednesday in connection with an ongoing money laundering probe into several illegal online betting platforms, people familiar with the development said on Tuesday. These platforms allegedly use surrogate advertisements and collect funds from users.
An officer, who didn't want to be named, said Raina's statement will be recorded under Prevention of Money Laundering Act (PMLA). The cricketer has been asked to appear at 11am at ED headquarters in Delhi, the officer said. The financial crimes probe agency is investigating multiple illegal online betting platforms and has questioned tech firms, representatives of media houses who have received money in the form of advertisements. Earlier representatives of Google and Meta were also called to the ED office regarding the probe.
Several platforms hosting illegal betting and gambling links, including instances of advertisements placed for them on various social media outlets and app stores, are under the ED scanner.
In 2023, the Union Ministry of Information and Broadcasting issued four advisories to newspapers, broadcast news channels, entertainment channels, publishers of online news and current affairs content, online advertisement intermediaries (like Google), and social media platforms directing them not to advertise online betting platforms.
Despite these instructions, advertisements for online betting platforms continued to appear, with eminent personalities from the entertainment and sports industries endorsing them. According to the information gathered by ED, multiple betting platforms, which have been banned over the years, still run their operations by changing names and are promoted by celebrities and social media influencers....
