DRI arrests director of Nashik firm in Rs.9-cr nutrition import duty evasion case
MUMBAI, May 26 -- The Directorate of Revenue Intelligence (DRI) has arrested the director of a Nashik-based firm for allegedly mis-declaring nutrition products worth Rs.54 crore to evade Rs.9 crore in customs duty. The products, imported from China, included high-value supplements such as Pea Protein and Collagen Peptides, which were falsely declared as Glycine-an amino acid that attracts lower duty.
The accused was intercepted at Mumbai airport on Saturday after returning from Barcelona, Spain, and was produced in court on Sunday. He has been remanded to judicial custody till June 6.
The DRI began its probe in January based on specific intelligence and detained four suspicious containers. An inspection reportedly revealed significant discrepancies between declared and actual goods, pointing to systematic misclassification and wrongful availing of duty concessions. Sources said the director had earlier evaded summons citing health issues but travelled abroad for an exhibition. Though he paid Rs.2 crore towards the alleged dues on May 16, he has not admitted guilt. The case involves offences under Sections 132 and 135 of the Customs Act.Abhishek Sharan...
