Diamantakos brace helps East Bengal beat Bagan
Kolkata, Aug. 18 -- It was the silence that amplified what followed. Half of Salt Lake stadium emptied quickly, the other half roared into Sunday night with pent up emotions of over two years.
East Bengal fans had found their voice, the 2-1 win against Mohun Bagan Super Giant in the quarter-final of the 134th Durand Cup felt like they had won Asia's oldest tournament.
There will be sterner tests in the season, assuming there is a season. Diamond Harbour FC await in the semi-final, but those are thoughts reserved for another day. For now, it was all about joy and jubilation and it was provided by a man who didn't start.
There were great expectations from Dimitrios Dimantakos but all he could produce was four goals and one assist in 19 Indian Super League matches last term. But on Sunday, replacing the injured Hamid Ahadad in the 18th minute, the Greek striker compensated with goals in the 38th and 52nd minutes.
Anirudh Thapa pulled one back in the 68th with a grounder but for most of the night, Mohun Bagan had no answer to East Bengal's physicality and overall superiority.
It was in the 2023 Durand Cup, five derbies earlier, that East Bengal had last beaten their arch-rivals in Kolkata. Since then, Mohun Bagan finished an ISL season without losing at home. It needed East Bengal to show their cross-city rivals are invincible no more....
