Day after cylinder blast at Bikaner shop, toll rises to 9
Bikaner, May 9 -- The toll in the cylinder blast at a shop in Rajasthan's Bikaner rose to nine, with five more bodies recovered from the debris and one person succumbing to injuries on Thursday, police said.
Additional superintendent of police (ASP) Vishal Jangid said, "The incident took place at a jewellery shop in Kotwali police station area on Wednesday. The impact of the cylinder blast led to the collapse of the shop, killing three people and injuring several others. Several were feared trapped under the rubble. At least eight people were rushed to the trauma centre at PBM Hospital. Five more bodies were recovered on Thursday and one person succumbed to injuries at the hospital.
The deceased have been identified as Aslam Ali (35), Sachin (22), Kishan (22), Kishan Kumar (25), Ramswaroop (22), residents of Bikaner; Nandadulal (25), Sekh Aslam (38), and Aslam (30), all from West Bengal. The identity of one more person is yet to confirmed, police said.
Officials said the blast took place when gold inlay and enamelling work was being carried out. The market houses around 30 shops. Police, SDRF teams, and locals were involved in the rescue operation, police said, adding that fire tenders were deployed to control the situation.
Expressing condolence, chief minister Bhajan Lal Sharma and former CM Ashok Gehlot assured support for the victims' families. The CM expressed his condolences and assured swift medical aid. "The news of the loss of life due to a gas cylinder explosion in Bikaner yesterday is extremely sad and heartbreaking," Sharma said in a post on X.
In a post on X, leader of opposition in Rajasthan assembly Tikaram Jully said, "The news of the death of 9 people due to a cylinder blast in Bikaner is extremely sad and unfortunate. My deepest condolences to the bereaved families."...
