Mumbai, June 13 -- If the State Election Commission (SEC) has its way, corporators of the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) will not be able to retain their post in the civic body if they also get elected to the state assembly or the Parliament. The SEC has recommended uniformity in the laws that deal with the elections of the local bodies to weed out discrepancies in the provisions related to the elected members.

Elections to the municipalities, district councils, grampanchayats, nagar panchayats are held under five different laws. BMC is governed under a separate Mumbai Municipal Corporation (MMC) Act and the rest of the corporations come under the purview of the Maharashtra Municipal Corporation Act.
